Modern Knives - How It All Got Started
By Pete Kautz

Like all things in life, Modern Knives started as a passing idea.  A casual daydream.  A "Wouldn't it be cool if..." kind of thing.  However, unlike most flights of fancy, this idea was one that would not go away, and in fact only got stronger in my mind over time until it became a concrete reality that we all now share.

Perhaps it was the place, Jim Keating's annual Riddle of Steel training camp, that had something to do with this idea being lodged deeply in my brain.  I still can see us standing on the docks of the river in the moonlight, talking about how it would be great if there was a magazine out there for people like us.  A magazine that offered real insight into the advanced martial arts without all the Hollywood hype, tournament concerns, celebrities, gossip, and advertising agendas.

Everyone there had grown up reading martial arts magazines, gun magazines, knife magazines, and so on but none of these addressed the real concerns we had or satisfied our desires for advanced training.  How many times had we all bought magazines only to realize there were no articles of interest, or that we could have written them better ourselves?

Even publications that had been good at one time were all now on the decline it seemed.  Once proud martial arts magazines were stooping to new lows, running "ring card girl" pictures and features on "had been" actors with a tenuous martial arts connection and models who wanted to be actresses (and who had the requisite 2 weeks karate experience to justify them getting a full page in the magazine as a "Profile")

What did any of this have to do with self defense or learning?

Well, this conversation stuck with me after the 2004 Riddle of Steel, and several months later I woke up from a nap with the concept of Modern Knives buzzing in my head.  A video magazine filled with learning and insights, without any advertisers, and each issue a solid chunk of information on a different theme.  I could ignore this no longer...

It has been a lot of work putting Modern Knives together, juggling all the responsibilities here in the office, contacting instructors, filming, editing, and so on but the results have been worth it based on the e-mails I get from happy subscribers, who get so excited when they receive a new issue.  When you have people with 10-15-20+ years in the martial arts raving about how awesome something is, it makes you feel good because you know these guys have seen it all.

I hope you will join us and check out Modern Knives for yourself.

All the very best,

Pete Kautz
